NUTRITION FOR EYE HEALTH
Several nutrients have been used in an attempt to treat or prevent the development of eye diseases. Vitamins A, C, D and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin, omega-3 fatty acids all play a role in eye health. Research suggests that antioxidants reduce your risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.
Essential fatty acids are crucial for proper visual development in infants. ALAs appear to alleviate symptoms of dry eye syndrome. Studies suggest that prolonged deficiencies may increase the risk of damage to the retina. EFAs also play a role in helping eye fluids (aqueous) drain, which helps to regulate intraocular pressure.
Targeted nutrition can benefit eye health and visual performance. CERI is conducting research to evaluate the role of nutrition and nutraceuticals for prevention of eye disease and enhancement of vision for individuals with vision problems or those with critical visual demands, such as elite sports athletes.
